Le mois de janvier nous réserve bien généralement un avant goût de ce qui va cartonner à partir d’avril, même dans ce monde obscur qu’est la tendance capillaire. Cette année, comme tous les ans depuis que le monde est monde, les tendances printemps/été en coiffure rappellent les sirènes, le monoï et Pamela Anderson étendue sur la plage de Malibu.

Place au court !

Comme d’habitude, la température qui remonte est souvent le bon moment pour s’alléger le tif. Cependant, l’ultra court n’est plus réellement au goût du jour (on avait vécu un revival à cause d’Agyness Denn, en décrépitude de la touffe désormais), mais on observe une remontée des coupes au carré, ainsi qu’au court qui encadre le visage (la petite tête est abandonnée sans ménagement). Ce court s’agrémente d’une frange un peu brouillon, bien loin de la tendance frange rideau qui faisait encore fureur il n’y a pas si longtemps.

Long mais pas trop

La longueur maximum repérée pour la saison ? Juste au dessus de la poitrine ! Cette longueur est parfaite pour se coiffer tous les jours avec un brushing souple, mais aussi pour confectionner des chignons un peu mous ou une queue de cheval stricte. Ce long est légèrement dégradé pour donner du mouvement, et dit non à la frange pour ne pas plomber le visage.

Le retour des mèches

Le balayage avait été un peu oublié ces derniers temps, avec l’avènement des couleurs franches : le roux et le blond. Cette saison, on retrouve la joie des petites papillotes dans les cheveux grâce aux balayages ingénieux, autrement dit de jolies mèches noisettes dans un brun chocolat, ou des mèches blond vénitien dans un roux. Évidemment, les mèches peroxydées dans les cheveux bruns sont à réserver aux filles de télé-réalité, on est quand même pas des sauvages. Le balayage « naturel » permet aux cheveux de paraitre plus lumineux, mais aussi de donner un peu de volume, par effet d’optique.

De la vraie couleur

Finie les couleurs froides, comme le noir corbeaux et le blond presque blanc. La saison qui arrive nous réserve de très belles couleurs, plus naturelles, mais aussi beaucoup plus lumineuses. Le blond se fait plus doré, avec des reflets chauds, et craint donc moins l’effet racine un peu crado. Le brun se débarrasse un peu de ses reflets froids et bleutés pour devenir beaucoup plus proche d’un beau châtain foncé, aux reflets chocolat ou encore caramel. Enfin, le roux est beaucoup plus naturel : entendez par là que les pigments rouges, c’est fini. Franck Provost propose même une couleur divine, appelée Ambre Vénitien, offrant un roux modulable selon sa couleur naturelle, pour un effet plus visible, mais aussi à la repousse plus facile, quand la nature reprend ses droits sur ton crâne.

Exit le lisse

Grande surprise : le lisse n’a plus la cote ! Alors que depuis des années on nous répète que le cheveu lisse, c’est l’assurance de la classe absolue dans notre société, la tendance printemps/été 2011 consacre les frisettes et autres ondulations. Grosse tendance sur les cheveux courts : les avoir frisés, ambiance boucles folles et crinière indomptable. Cette coiffure sera facile à coiffer, ravissante pour les visages fins, mais à bannir à tout prix des visages ronds : baby face qui a abusé du Nesquick assurée. Les cheveux longs et mi-longs chercheront plutôt du côté de la mini-vague ou de la boucle large. L’inspiration ? Les sirènes échouées sur la plage, attendant le mâââââle pêcheur.
C’est donc un retour au naturel que nous montre les tendances coiffures printemps/été 2011, loin du diktat du lisseur à cheveux et des couleurs difficiles à entretenir. Oh mais tiens, si en fait on avait déjà tout ce qu’il faut sur nos têtes ?

Les coiffures constituent une des expressions plastiques les plus intimes d’un héritage qui plonge profondément ses racines dans les traditions africaines tant pour la hiérarchie sociale, la beauté, le veuvage, le mariage, la guerre, le sexe.
La texture des cheveux, qui permet toutes sortes d’interventions, fait de la coiffure la plus variée et la plus complexe des parures.
Si dans quelques sociétés hommes et femmes se rasent entièrement le crâne, nombreuses sont celles qui préfèrent sculpter la chevelure: les Kikuyus du Kenya se rasent le dessus de la tête, ne conservant qu’une petite touffe sur la nuque; certaines populations du Congo démocratique (République démocratique du Congo) réservent plutôt un ovale sur le front; les Peuls Bororos du Cameroun gardent une mèche nattée au sommet du crâne.
Les formes de coiffures peuvent atteindre une grande complexité, tel le savant cimier des femmes peules. Souvent, le temps n’est pas compté pour satisfaire le besoin de parure. Ainsi, les femmes africaines passent des heures à faire tresser leur chevelure en de fines nattes;
les femmes karamojongs de l’Ouganda mettent des années à édifier leur coiffure et sont amenées à dormir avec un trépied en guise d’oreiller pour ne pas abîmer le fruit d’un si patient travail.
Les jeunes hommes koniaguis de la Guinée forestière sont coiffés de cimiers semblables à ceux des Peuls. Les Chillouks du Soudan se pétrissent les cheveux avec de la boue et réussissent, après séchage, à modeler de remarquables formes. Les femmes noubas, du même pays, portent une coiffure parsemée de petites coques d’argile rouge. En Angola, certains peuples empâtent la chevelure des femmes dans un mélange de terre et d’huile végétale.
La coiffure est souvent agrémentée de postiches en fibres végétales, de plumes d’oiseaux, de peaux, de fourrures ou de cornes. Les plumes, en partie à cause de leur légèreté, sont très largement utilisées dans les coiffures, postiches ou non, en Afrique. Les coquillages, coquilles d’œufs d’autruche et divers autres objets d’ornement sont également associés aux coiffures, mais ces parures laissent de plus en plus la place à la verroterie et aux matières plastiques d’importation.

Le tissage consiste à tisser avec les cheveux des cheveux synthétiques, en associant tresses et fil à cheveux.
Les tresses
Je me suis souvent faite tresser, en Afrique et hors de l’Afrique. Pour vouloir se faire tresser, il faut avoir beaucoup de patience, car celà dure des heures, voir une ou deux journées. Tout dépend de la longeur des cheveux et de la grosseur des tresses. Personnellement ça a pris souvent toute la journée. Et le résultat est sublime. Mais le problème qui se pose, lorsque vous ajoutez des mèches synthétiques à vos cheveux, ce qui fait que la tresse tient mieux, car ayant des cheveux métissés, les tresses se défont facilement, c’est que c’est très lourd pour le cou et on peut attraper ainsi un terrible mal de cou, et de dos. Mais la plupart du temps, le problème ne se pose pas et la femme africaine est resplendissante avec ses tresses qu’elle garde, un bon moment avant de tout défaire et recommencer.

Tresser est un art, qui demande connaissance et doigté. Il y a maintes façons de se faire tresser. Certaines femmes tressent en vous tirant les cheveux, alors qu’avec d’autres vous ne sentez presque rien. Il faut toutefois dans les deux cas, ne pas avoir un cuir chevelu très fragile. Il faut bien dire qu’en Afrique, étant donné les cheveux qu’on a, les tresses sont le seul moyen de rester bien coiffée, quand on est une femme, à moins d’avoir les cheveux très courts, d’aimer porter un afro, ou de se faire défriser. En Afrique de l’Ouest, on aime faire des dessins avec les cheveux; je me suis faite tresser au Nigéria et j’avais plein de ronds sur ma tête, avec des tresses très très fines; mais aussi avec des mèches et des tresses bien plus grosses; une autre coiffure toute aussi jolie. En Afrique Centrale, on a tendance à faire des sillons; une coiffure simple et qui se tient. En voici quelques-unes que je vous laisse admirer.

 Ne pas mélanger les produits
90% des femmes noires ont les cheveux défrisés. Une technique chimique à pratiquer avec beaucoup de précaution, car elle brûle la fibre capillaire. Christelle Clairicia conseille de ne jamais le faire toute seule : à la maison, on demande à une amie, car elle y voit plus clair et évite de passer deux fois au même endroit. Mais l'idéal est encore de le faire en salon. Les spécialistes effectuent un diagnostic personnalisé et adaptent la durée et l'intensité du produit à votre type de cheveux.

Il est très important de ne pas cumuler des produits chimiques - coloration + défrisage, par exemple- sans demander l'avis d'un coiffeur professionnel. Une mauvaise combinaison de produits, ou une utilisation trop rapprochée, risque d'abîmer les cheveux, de les fragiliser et de les faire chuter. La règle d'or : trois semaines minimum entre une coloration et un défrisage.

Born with a head full of curly hair? You might have never thought about it this way, but you are so lucky to have natural curls. Curls are sexy and romantic, and men love them. Picture these curly celebrity beauties and let them be your muses: Sarah Jessica Parker, Keri Russell, Beyonce, Meg Ryan and Debra Messing. In case you haven't noticed, they have curly hair. And they're coming out in public. With gorgeous, naturally curly hairstyles. And if they can do it, you can do it to.

So now that you're ready to embrace your curls, it's time to put on your brave face and tame the jungle. Most curly-haired women just don't know where to start, so they leave their frantic, tangled mop of curls just sitting there. That's not going to do you any good. The trick is getting them to behave, and it's easier than you think. After that, it takes almost no work to maintain them on a day-to-day basis. Pretty sweet, right?

Once you have your curls looking their best, you'll be amazed at all the compliments you'll get. When you feel like the odd girl out, surrounded by straight strands, ask yourself: Why look like a copy of everybody else? Your curls will become your trademark if you embrace them. Check out the easy care routine below, taken from Lorrain Massey's "Curly Girl, The Handbook." Her step-by-step guide to cleaning and styling your curly hair will finally free you from the tyranny of the straightening iron and chemical straighteners.

Cleaning:
1. Throw away your shampoo. That's no joke. This goes even for non-curly girls. Shampoo is detergent, and your hair does NOT need detergent. You will have perfectly clean hair using just conditioner and water. This is one of the most important steps you can take. It sounds weird, but just trust us.

2. Once a week, cleanse your hair with just conditioner. Select a conditioner high in humectants like Panthenol, vegetable glycerine, and sorbitol. First put some conditioner on your fingertips and massage your scalp to loosen dirt. Next rinse thoroughly. (On the other days of the week, just wet your hair thoroughly, and go to step 4.)

3. Next, rub a quarter-size blob of conditioner between your hands and smooth it over the outer layer of your hair. Then work another quarter-size amount to the underlayer of hair at the nape of the neck (where it's prone to knots). Be gentle so as not to break hair. Use your fingers as a comb and comb through your hair from underneath.

4. Now, spread another quarter-size amount of conditioner through the hair on each side of your head, using your fingers as a comb. What you're doing is distributing conditioner evenly through your curls so that they separate instead fusing together.

5. At this point your hair should feel smooth and silky. You will want to experiment with how much conditioner to rinse out. The first time, try not rinsing at all, or just giving your head a very quick rinse to help evenly distribute the conditioner.

Styling:
6. Bend forward and cup your wet hair loosely in a towel. Now scrunch it upward toward the scalp to blot up the moisture. Never rub or wring your hair dry. Gently continue scrunching and squeezing your hair in sections, going with the natural waves and not disturbing the hair too much, until it's no longer soaking wet.

7. Next, rub a tablespoon of clear styling gel between your palms. Bend over at the waist, and starting at the ends, scrunch the gel in toward the scalp. Picture yourself squeezing an accordion in order to get the right motion. Work from the nape of your neck and work around your head, scrunching the top layer last.

8. Now you can begin shaping. Look in the mirror and scrunch section of curls with your palms, pushing up and squeezing gently into place. For shorter curls or curls that are too loose, twist the hair with a finger and a clip. Shape your hair using this scrunching, twisting and clipping, until it's in the form you want it to take when dry. Now, rub another half teaspoon of gel between your palms and very gently graze your hands over the top layer of hair to minimize frizz.

9. TIP: to get the curls on the top of your head to stand a little taller, lift and clip the hair at the roots. Just take a section of hair at the crown and hold it tight about 1/2 inch away from the scalp. Then place a hairclip or two (the old fashioned metal kind is fine) close the scalp to hold the hair up away from the scalp. It should take about six clips (if you use 2 per section) to lift the top of your hair. This can be good for getting the front section out of your eyes.

10. Let your hair air dry. Do NOT blow dry. Maybe in a few weeks you can return to occasional blow drying, but for now don't do it. Your hair needs a chance to normalize and rest. When your hair is completely dry, remove any clips gently. Bend over and give your hair a little shakeout. Now, with your fingers, very gently fluff your hair from underneath. Don't touch the top layer -- frizz alert.

Affaire Dominique Strauss-Kahn : "la vérité éclatera"

				Actuellement assigné en résidence suite aux accusations de violences sexuelles qui pèsent contre lui, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, ancien directeur du FMI, a tenu à écrire une lettre à ses collègues. Dominique Strauss-Kahn se trouve actuellement dans une résidence surveillée du sud de Manhattan et vient d'envoyer un email adressé en anglais au personnel du FMI qu'il ne dirige plus. DSK aimait manifestement beaucoup le FMI et dresse le bilan de son action durant ses trois ans et demi à la tête de l'institution. "Cette lettre est un geste formidable qui montre le grand attachement qu'il avait pour le FMI. C'est lui tout craché. Ce n'est pas un coup monté par son équipe de communication" , a affirmé un cadre qui l'a beaucoup côtoyé. Ainsi s'exprime solennellement DSK: "Je tenais à prendre contact avec vous, personnellement et directement, vous exprimer ma profonde tristesse et ma frustration d'avoir à partir dans ces circonstances. Je le fais parce que je crois que c'est dans le meilleur intérêt de l'institution qui m'est si chère et dans votre intérêt à vous "le staff", que j'apprécie profondément et que j'admire", explique t-il dans son email adressé à l'actuel patron par intérim du FMI, John Lipsky. Il entend toujours "nier dans les termes les plus forts les allégations" portées contre lui. "Je suis convaincu que la vérité va sortir et que je serai exonéré", souligne-t-il dans cette missive qui a probablement été lue par ses avocats, soucieux qu'elle ne puisse contribuer qu'à plaider sa cause. Strauss-Kahn: Predator or Plot Victim?

The head of a powerful international institution is about to announce his candidacy for the French presidency. All the polls show him well ahead of the unpopular incumbent. The gilded salons of the Elysée Palace seem within his grasp—until a stunning event derails his presidential hopes and his political career: incredibly, improbably, he is accused of attempting to rape a New York hotel maid and is arrested aboard an airplane shortly before takeoff.
It could be the plot of an international thriller if it were not true. At least the above details are true—Dominique Strauss-Kahn, 62, the dashing silver-haired director of the International Monetary Fund, sits in a New York prison cell after a Manhattan Criminal Court judge denied his bail request on Monday. He faces up to 74 years if convicted on charges of attempted rape, sexual abuse, and illegal imprisonment. Those are the facts. What is less certain—at least until it is proven in court—is whether the astounding accusations against him are wholly or even partially true.

If Strauss-Kahn is guilty as charged, no one could condone such outrageous behavior or such a baffling lapse of judgment. He would deservedly become not only a political outcast in France but the inmate of a U.S. prison for years to come. But you don’t have to be a knee-jerk conspiracy buff to entertain the notion that Strauss-Kahn just may be the victim of a set-up. If this were indeed the plot of a thriller, in fact, that would be the most intriguing and most likely scenario. And the key question would be this: who profits from this character’s downfall?
In the real life arena of French politics, the most obvious beneficiary is incumbent President Nicolas Sarkozy, increasingly unpopular in the polls and likely headed to a humiliating third-place finish in the May 2012 elections. Another beneficiary is Marine Le Pen, the newly named head of the far-right anti-immigrant National Front Party, who polls were placing in second place behind Strauss-Kahn in the presidential contest. Also standing to gain from Strauss-Kahn’s disgrace are his Socialist rivals who hope to replace him as their party’s standard bearer: former party chief François Hollande, current leader Martine Aubry, defeated 2007 candidate Ségolène Royal, and former prime minister Laurent Fabius. Other beneficiaries might be found among those who oppose Strauss-Kahn’s policies at the head of the IMF, where he has pushed a lenient bailout plan for debt-strapped Greece.
If I were writing a thriller along these lines, I would find a plotter among the above “suspects” who pays a 32-year-old African immigrant hotel maid to blow the whistle on this bothersome Frenchman. The news that an activist in Sarkozy’s conservative UMP party was the first to announce Strauss-Kahn’s arrest via Twitter just minutes after it happened does raise unsettling questions.
Even bigger questions emerge when one considers Strauss-Kahn’s position. On the one hand, he is known as the “great seducer” and makes no bones about the fact that he is a womanizer. In 2008 Strauss-Kahn, who is married to French TV journalist Anne Sinclair, admitted to having an affair with a subordinate at the IMF. This week, a young woman emerged with a story of being molested by him during an interview nine years ago. Like Bill Clinton, he is a man with a zipper problem that has in the past outstripped his better judgment. On the other hand, Strauss-Kahn is a man of uncommon intelligence—a former economics professor, ex-finance minister, fluent speaker of multiple foreign languages and, most important, perhaps, an expert chess player. Considering the presidential stakes that were clearly within his reach, is it plausible that he would be cavorting naked through his hotel suite and committing acts of sexual violence on a chambermaid in so public a place as a New York hotel? If he did that, he deserves the severest of punishments. But is it plausible?
French opinion, in any case, has reacted with a mixture of disbelief, shame and outrage. Sarkozy’s spokesman has called for “extraordinary prudence” in discussing the affair. Marine Le Pen is practically gloating over the downfall of her leftist rival. And Strauss-Kahn’s fellow Socialists are mostly taking an innocent-until-proven-guilty line. As for the general French public, which shrugged off Strauss-Kahn’s past womanizing antics as par for the course in this sexually liberal society, there would be no tolerance for sexual aggression if those charges are indeed proven. But as Strauss-Kahn awaits his day in court, it appears clear that his chances of even entering the Socialist Party’s primary contest are virtually nil, and his presidential hopes are dashed. If he is the victim of a plot, it was a damn good one. And if not, France has dodged a bullet

Ce sont nos confrères d'RTL qui ont révélé l'information ce matin sur leurs ondes. En effet, Anne Sinclair est partie ce lundi après-midi à New York en compagnie d'Anne Hommel, la chargée de communication - et ami du couple - de DSK.

Objectifs : soutenir son mari, mais aussi et surtout prouver à la justice américaine par sa simple présence que DSK ne comptait en aucun cas quitter le territoire américain.

Seuls les détenus dont les noms commencent par les lettres A à L sont en effet autorisés à recevoir de la visite ce jour. Résultat : la journaliste devrait normalement pouvoir voir son époux demain.

Rappelons qu'Anne Sinclair n'a pas vu Dominique Strauss-Kahn depuis le début de l'affaire. D'après nos confrères du Monde, Anne Sinclair a reçu un "étrange" coup de fil le week-end dernier, au cours duquel DSK lui dévoilait, en sortant de son hôtel le Sofitel, que "quelque chose de grave venait de se passer".

Popular in France the Dukan diet has reached the U.S. With a growing obesity epidemic in this country this diet is already taking off for many yo-yo dieters and first time dieters.
Developed by a French physician 10 years ago this diet is similar the Atkins diet. The diet has an emphasis in eating lots of protein, few carbohydrates, drinking plenty of water, along with a daily dose of healthy oat bran and a 20 minute walk each day.
The diet includes four steps, or phases, and you are warned not to take them out of order. Here are the four Dukan Diet phases:
Phase One- Attack: Eating only pure proteins in lean meats, lean cured meats, seafood, eggs, fat-free dairy products;
Phase Two- Weight loss: Add vegetables to the protein choices;
Phase Three- Consolidation: Add fruit, bread, low fat cheese and even pasta

Ingrédients de la recette :

150g de truite fumée
450g de riz arborio
300g de petit pois frais
200g d'asperges vertes
2 oignons nouveaux
2 artichauts poivrades
2Cs de cognac
3Cs d'huile d'olive
sel, poivre du moulin
30g de beurre
10cl de vin blanc
1/2 citron
2l de bouillon de légumes



Recette Risotto du Printemps :

Coupez les artichauts en 4, éliminez le foin, puis émincez-les en tranches fines.
Trempez-les dans une jatte d'eau citronnée.
Epluchez les asperges et débitez les tiges en tronçons et réservez les pointes.
Epluchez les oignons et émincez-les.
Ecossez les petits pois.
Taillez la truite en dés puis versez du cognac dessus.
Faites suer pendant 5 minutes les légumes dans de l'huile d'olive.
Incorporez le riz puis mélangez à la cuillère en bois.
Mettez le vin blanc et laissez évaporez.
Poursuivez la cuisson pendant 20 minutes en versant doucement le bouillon chaud. Ajoutez le beurre, la ciboulette et les pointes d'asperges.
Laissez 5 minutes de cuisson. Puis les dés de truite fumée. Laissez encore 5 minutes.
Servez chaud avec une viande froide.

Kate Middleton chose to wear the Cartier “halo” tiara, which was made in 1936 and purchased by the Duke of York (later King George VI) for his wife, Elizabeth's mother (also Elizabeth). Queen Elizabeth received it as an 18th-birthday present, at which time she was Princess Elizabeth. The delicate headpiece, which is as understated as a headband of diamonds can be, was lent to Kate by the Queen, though there's a chance she'll come into one of her own soon: the Queen’s 1981 wedding gift to Diana was the Cambridge Lovers’ Knot Tiara. Diana wore a Spencer-family tiara to her wedding.

Kate’s earrings, custom-made by Robinson Pelham to match her tiara, were a present from her parents. The earrings, with acorn motifs, was inspired by the fresh, new Middleton-family crest. Pelham also designed the more floral earrings worn by the other lady in white—maid of honor Pippa Middleton.


Kate's wedding ring, which seemed to have given William a bit of difficulty in the slipping on, is a band of Welsh gold by Wartski, which also crafted Welsh-gold wedding bands for Prince Charles and Camilla.

Tout comme sa soeur également, Pippa avait les cheveux libres, juste retenus par quelques fleurs. Elue célibataire de l'année en 2008 par Tatler, on lui redonnerait volontier ce titre en 2011 !

Gaga du chignon de Lady

Puisque le ton de la démesure  a été donné cette année par Lady Gaga,  on suit le mouvement, en arborant des coiffures choucroutées  et haut montées !  Les plus expertes pourront se lancer dans  ce chignon high level, obtenu en cinq étapes. Premier geste : gonflez la matière en crêpant  copieusement. Séparez ensuite la masse capillaire : une large mèche sur le devant du front,  deux petites mèches latérales et une, de taille moyenne, dans la nuque. Ramassez et attachez  les cheveux en chignon banane.  Ramenez ensuite les mèches de côté  pour « couvrir » le chignon,  en laissant libre celle dans le cou.  Enfin, gonflez les cheveux sur le haut du crâne en les nouant façon « coque ». Although genius hairstylists Richard Ward and James Pryce are still by Kate Middleton‘s side for the rest of her wedding day (and night), they managed to sneak us an email with the inside scoop about bride’s gorgeous down ‘do. Turns out, it was mostly her idea. “Catherine was very involved in her style and the look was her based on her personal preference,” they wrote to InStyle. “It was a matter of finding that balance between feeling natural and reflecting the occasion.” The style looks fairly simple, but the hairstylists noted that it was actually a thoughtfully-executed look. “The front was swept back in two sections on either side [of her head], and then twisted loosely and pinned gently at the back of the head,” they explained. “Her fringe was draped over her forehead to keep the style soft and romantic.”

There was hardly a dry eye and nary a bare head in the Abbey. The majority of headgear worn by royal attendees was designed by Irish milliner Philip Treacy. He made the Bea-tific ring (seen above) as well as the electric-blue canoe-shaped headpiece worn by Princess Beatrice’s younger sister, Eugenie. (We saw a similarly O’Keefe-esque look on English “It girl” Tara Palmer-Tomkinson.) Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, wore a straw-colored disc-shaped hat by Treacy, and posh Victoria Beckham topped off a dress of her own creation with a Treacy design, as did Princess Michael of Kent, Queen Anna-Marie of Greece, and Princess Mathilde of Belgium

Kate Middleton’s Wedding Dress: A Creamy-White, Lace-Sleeved Homage to Grace Kelly

And at last, we know:
Catherine Middleton, Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge, wore a nip-waisted, long-sleeved dress (Grace Kelly alert!) with sheer, cream-lace arms and a V-neckline over a form-fitting bodice. It was designed by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, as was long rumored. On her head, Catherine wore a slim, feminine tiara, covered with a stunning scalloped-lace-edged veil; the tiara is the Cartier Halo tiara, and was a gift to Queen Elizabeth when she was a girl of 18. The dress’s skirt was full with a long train, with a ruffled bustle at the train’s top—it is made of ivory and white satin silk gazar. Though Burton meant to convey the opening of a full-blooming flower, the fullness and train-length of Kate’s dress are quite a bit scantier than those of Diana, whose cream-puff gown notably burst forth in crinkly fashion from that carriage 30 years ago. Catherine’s earrings were dangling, diamond-encrusted drops—a gift from her parents that were commissioned to echo the tiara’s motifs and the new Middleton family crest. Her hair was swept off her face in the front, but down in the back in loose curls around her lace-covered shoulders. Her bouquet was a humble, wildflower–esque green-and-white posey—full of ivy, hyacinth, myrtle, and sweet William (ha!)—and her attendants wore the same shade of creamy white.

The stunning lace pattern on the bride’s ensemble is known as Irish Carrickmacross, an ornate appliqué form of hand-made lace that was made for her using a combination of French Chantilly lace and English Cluny lace. Carrickmacross is an Irish embroidery tradition that dates to 1820.
Under the dress, Middleton wore hand-made Alexander McQueen shoes, wrought of ivory duchesse satin and hand-embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework. According to the official royal-wedding website, the needlework-school craftsmen who handled the lace fabrics in Middleton’s gown and accessories “washed their hands every thirty minutes.”
